5 Internet Business Myths That Keep Success At Bay

Interested in making a full time income running an internet business?

Well, one of the first things you need to do is forget a lot of the "myths" that keep being repeated online. Let's go through five of them here:

Myth 1: "Running a successful online business is easy".

No it isn't. No business success comes easy.

If money was really that easy to make, word would spread and everyone would jump on it, including investors!

Business doesn't work like that - it's competitive, and because of this requires hard work and vigilance.

If you treat your internet business like a job, and always do your very best for your boss (you), then you're off to a great start.

That said - if you're only looking to make $200 extra a month, or even $500 extra a month, that IS easy. Just sell some odds and ends on eBay. A part time income is not particularly difficult to achieve online with online auctions and other outlets like Amazon Marketplace.

But - if you're looking for a full time income, you need to work at it. There is no "secret formula", never was and never will be.

Myth 2: "Running an internet business costs next to nothing".

Well, somewhat true, but it misses the point.

You can run an online business very cheaply (my basic running costs are around $150 a month - hosting, autoresponders...etc) but if you want your business to grow at very low cost, you'll have to do all the promotions for free.

Free online marketing tactics generally take time to work, and require a lot of elbow-grease: writing articles to distribute, writing pages to get search engine traffic, creating products, building up an affiliate program, getting links in to your sites...

Alternatively - if you want to speed things up, you can advertise. And depending on how well your site converts visitors into customers, and how targeted your advertising is, you can grow very quickly that way.

If you're interested in putting a few hundred dollars aside into an "advertising fund" and trying to build your business quickly that way, pay-per-click advertising would probably be the best way to start.

Focus on Google Adwords & Yahoo Search Marketing (formerly Overture) for starters since they have the most traffic, as well as the most responsive traffic.

But before diving in headfirst and potentially throwing good money after bad on inefficient advertising, it's strongly recommended you fully understand the subject, or get the advice of a professional.

Either consult with one (if you can find a reputable one), or devour eBooks on the subject.

Recommended eBooks are anything by Andrew Goodman or Perry Marshall. Make sure the information is up to date though as the pay-per-click field changes incredibly quickly. Twelve months is a lifetime when it comes to the search engines.

Also recommended is spending time absorbing the Google Adwords training site and also the Yahoo Search Marketing training site.

Both these companies want you to succeed with your advertising (since you'll advertise with them for longer) and so have a lot of great information to help you get started and build a successful advertising campaign.

Myth 3: "All traffic is the same".

This myth often presents itself as "Buy 10,000 visitors from us for $9.95 and you'll make lots of sales!" (or something along those lines).

Ignore such sales pitches - they're complete rubbish. And here's why:

Bulk traffic like this is completely untargeted and a complete waste of your time and money.

Just think - if you were selling a book through direct mail on "How To Get Rich In Real Estate" and you had to choose a mailing list to promote to, would you rather:

1) Mail your offer to a list of people who had already expressed an interest in the subject by purchasing similar products?

2) Or would you feel it was better to instead pick names at random out of the phone book and make that list the offer?

Silly question, right?

Well, it's the same online - all traffic is not identical. People surfing have different interests and motivations, just like they do offline.

To maximize your chances of making money, you want to target the visitors most likely to convert to customers for you and get them to your site.

Myth 4: "Opt-in email doesn't work anymore".

From my own personal experience:

Opt-in mail does work, but not as well as it used it. Many spam and email filters are over-zealous these days and delete mail people have asked to receive (opt-in mail) at the same time as unsolicited email (spam).

Plus - people are very worried about phishing emails these days (emails that try to fool you into typing in your private details) and often delete emails out of fear if they don't recognize who sent it.

But these points aside, opt in email can still work - so don't discount it before you try it.

Myth 5: "You don't need any technical skills"

Let's be frank - without technical skills you're going to struggle big time.

If you're going to run an internet business, for starters you want to be comfortable with computers and familiar with the internet.

And you really want to get to grips with HTML and FTP. Those seven letters are the building blocks of creating any kind of website and getting it live online. If you don't know them, get to know them. There's plenty of great tutorials online.

Or even just for starters - you can easily create web pages visually (without messing around with HTML code) by using a visual web page editor. There's plenty to be found by searching download.com.

So put these internet business myths out of your mind and get cracking on building your business into a success.

You should always buy Ty Beanie Babies from reputable dealers or from sellers who you know how to contact. These dealers and sellers should also have many references and/or feedback from other people they have done business with.

Most counterfeit Beanie Babies are easy to spot if you know what to look for. If you don't know what to look for then you will probably have a hard time telling most counterfeit Beanie Babies from authentic Ty Beanie Babies.

Beanie Baby shows are a good place to check out expensive Beanie Babies. Try to handle them if you can. Get to know the feel of the fabric and their overall appearance.

Some counterfeits are excellent reproductions, but regardless of how good the counterfeits look, they usually have many mistakes. It is never just one mistake.

If you are buying expensive Beanie Babies, then you should educate yourself on the counterfeits or at least know where to find the information when you need it.

1. Many of the counterfeits have spelling errors on the tags, but keep in mind that so do some of the authentic Ty Beanie Babies. So you usually have to look for other mistakes beside just this.

2. Check the tag dates and the addresses to make sure they are correct. Many of the counterfeits have the wrong date on the tush tag.

4. Is the type on the tags too light or too dark? Is it the right typeface?

7. Are the color of the hang tags identical? Or does the red and yellow on the hang tag look muted or too light or too dark? The hang tag should be blue red and not orange red.

8. The yellow star on the hang tag should be a bright sunshine yellow, not a mustard color.

9. Some of the counterfeit Beanie Babies have a yellow star on their hang tag that have points that are too "pointy." The points of authentic hang tag stars are slightly rounded.

10. Check the gold edge on the hang tag. It should have a nice clean line and be a light bright gold color. It shouldn't be brassy.

11. Check the overall size and shape of the Beanie. Some of the counterfeit Ty teddy bears have ears that are either too small or too large or perhaps the legs or arms are too short or are shaped strangely.

12. Is the teddy bear's head too large or overstuffed?

13. Check the eyes to see if they are too close together or too big or too small.

14. Are the eyes a solid color? Some Beanie Baby eyes are a solid color and some are not. Humphrey the camel has solid black eyes but most of the counterfeit Humphrey have eyes that are two-tone.

15. Check the fabric and see if it is rough or if the color is too dark or too light.

16. Does the fabric nap look right? Is the fabric rough, stiff or the wrong color?

17. Most authentic Beanies have nice plush fabric that "flows" in all directions and doesn't get "wrinkly."

One place you should avoid buying expensive Beanie Babies that are not authenticated, is online auctions like eBay. Odds are that if you buy enough of these expensive Beanie Babies that are not authenticated, that you will eventually end up buying some that are counterfeit.

Time for Change - Clearing the First Hurdle - By Glen Feechan

Absolutely vital to any business change is allocating some time to do it. Sadly, most companies find themselves in the position of poor Edward Bear when it comes to dealing with changes to their business processes. From my experience in helping clients to implement change within their businesses, I have outlined some thoughts to help you get started.

Face it!

You acknowledge that you need to change. You might know what you need to change too. You will make the change when you have time - this may be once a current project is finished, or once the year-end is out of the way, or when business slackens off.

You are in the grip of the vicious spiral that most businesses find themselves in. You are too busy to improve, you remain inefficient, and therefore remain too busy to improve.

Face it! There is never a right time, other than now. When this project is finished you will be into your year-end. When the year-end is out of the way, it's holiday time. The only way to pull yourself out of this is to make time NOW! Once you free up the time, the improvements you make help create more time and you find yourself in a virtuous circle of improvement.

What's going to give?

OK, you have faced up to the fact that Old Father Time isn't going to tap you on the shoulder and show you an extra week you didn't know was there. What can you do?

If the time isn't going to just appear, you will need to free it up from somewhere else. Assuming that the changes are to be implemented during working hours, this means that something has to give. You just need to decide what.

What would you do if a key member of staff was off sick for a week, or a major unexpected crisis occurred requiring "all hands on deck"? You would manage, you always have. Think of the things you would temporarily stop doing then. You never know, you might find that some of them aren't required anyway - there's your first improvement!

The key is to give the change process the level of importance it requires. We can always make time for things that are important enough. This needs to come from the top.

Lead by example

Employees, in general, treat as important what they believe their managers and leaders think is important. This belief comes from observing what managers do, far more than listening to what they say! It needs to be clear to employees the importance that management attaches to the changes being implemented.

With some clients we find it useful to have senior management represented at workshops where they may not strictly be required. It is very hard for employees to argue that their time is more valuable to the business than that of the Managing Director.

When a member of the management team misses a workshop or meeting planned as part of the process of change, it can have a devastating effect on employee availability for future workshops. This simple act can be read by the employees as: "Ignore what I have been telling you about these changes - the day-to-day business is what is really important!". Next time they are asked to attend a workshop, the answer is likely to be "I don't have the time."

Just Do it!

When it comes down to it, there is no substitute for action. In the words of the 35th US president:

"There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction. "

Antispam email accounts

Spam has evolved through the proliferation of e-mail accounts and Internet worldwide. Since mailing e-mails is free and easy, sending spam in the form of unsolicited e- mails to multiple recipients advertising a service or product is on the rise. However, spamming is recognized as a hindrance and annoyance by many and so finding ways to eliminate spam altogether, or at least block it, is a main effort of many. Yet, fighting spam is difficult because spammers have created their own computer world of host computers and methods for spamming e-mail accounts. So, if you want to fight spam you have to be diligent and creative.

One of the first things you should do if you have not already is to set up filters on your computer. These filters will block certain e-mail addresses from entering your inbox and will help you eliminate spam. However, if you block all e-mail addresses from a certain web site then you will also be eliminating any legitimate e-mails that might originate from that web site. However, because of the issue of spam web sites are dividing into two groups, more or less, those that support spam and those that do not. So, if you are receiving spam from a web site and you block that address you will likely be blocking just spam.

You can fight spam by writing to the web site, from a different e-mail address of course, and informing them that they are supporting spammers. If the company is real and fighting spam they will likely thank you for writing and want additional information in order to eliminate the spam from their web site. However, if the web site is a spam supporter then you will likely not receive a response and simply become a victim of their spamming again. So, be careful how you inform these companies they are supporting spam.

They might take any number of actions depending on the type of site they are. If it is a real site then they will likely welcome the information and may ask you to provide additional information in order for them to properly deal with the situation. If it is a spam friendly site you are writing to then they will either ignore your e-mail or simply add your e-mail address to their spam list. Also, sometimes the web site you are writing to is simply being exploited by the spammer and has no idea what is going on. Inform them they are being exploited and need to reconfigure their e-mail server in order to block spammers from using their e-mail as a host.

Another tip is to never respond to spam e-mail. By doing this you will simply be confirming that your e-mail address exists and you will begin receiving more e-mail. So, block the e-mail address rather than replying to it asking to be removed.

Finally, take care when visiting web sites that promise to remove your address from spam sites. More often than not these web sites are owned by spammers and they simply steal your e-mail address and send you more spam! The only way to get rid of spam is to fight it daily and even write to your congressional representative to bring the problem of spam into the political light.

Hi
